Story

The students of Xavier College, Kew, have decided to run a “Cook-Off” as a fundraising activity for our annual Social Justice Week (August 31st - September 6th).

The theme of this year’s Social Justice Week is “standing in solidarity with those who have been cast to the margins.” It is critical during these times of global crisis, that we are able to look outwards and beyond our personal struggles. “Generosity is the antidote to self-absorption,” advised our Rector, Fr Chris Middleton SJ. Social Justice Week invites us to spread awareness, to give back to the marginalised, and to enjoy a week full of fun activities.

Our goal is to raise funds for the Jesuit Mission COVID Emergency Fund in India (or area of greatest need) by getting students involved in cooking a lovely meal for their families. Students are sponsored by friends and family alike, to prepare and cook a meal at any time throughout the week. We encourage everybody to give it a go in the spirit of the occasion. Let’s get cooking!

Jesuit Mission (AUSTRALIAN JESUIT MISSION OVERSEAS AID FUND)

Jesuit Mission works in over 14 countries with people who are living in the margins, suffering the indignity of poverty and injustice. In each community we partner with local Jesuits and other companions to provide a range of support and training that empowers women, men and children so they can build skills, capacity and resilience to live full and free lives.

The programs:
- Break cycles of poverty through teaching and education
- Protect the health of communities by providing medical care and programs that improve access to clean water and toilets
- Develop independent, strong communities through livelihood training and income-generating projects
- Support asylum seekers, refugees and displaced people in crisis
- Enable effective emergency response and relief
